Leeds 3-3 Charlton

Leeds were relegated to Division One after Charlton striker Jason Euell inspired a rousing comeback.

The Addicks took an early lead through Matt Holland's 30-yard piledriver, but Leeds' Matthew Kilgallon restored parity with a close-range strike.

Jermaine Pennant scored a superb second for Leeds before the break and Alan Smith converted a second-half penalty.

But Leeds' advantage was shortlived as Euell scored from the spot and netted the equaliser from close range late on.

Charlton got off to a flying start, with Holland firing the visitors into an early lead.

Paul Konchesky slid the ball to the Republic of Ireland international, who took one touch before unleashing an unstoppable drive past Paul Robinson in the Leeds goal.

The Addicks had Leeds, who had the look of a relegated side, on the back foot throughout the opening period and should have made their dominance count with a second goal.

However, Leeds were given a way back into the match when Smith was fouled by Hermann Hreidarsson and the hosts were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area.

McPhail floated in the ball, which evaded the entire Charlton defence, and Kilgallon ghosted in at the back post to slot home the equaliser from a tight angle.

That break gave heart to Leeds, who went on to to play the better football thereafter.

Smith, James Milner and Pennant were fluid in the Leeds attack and all three were involved in their side's second goal.

Milner attempted a one-two with Smith but the ball deflected into the path of Pennant, who showed excellent close control to turn Charlton defender Luke Young inside out and apply a delightful finish to the move.

After the break, neither side could settle and the play was markedly scrappy.

Alan Curbishley made a triple substitution for Charlton, bringing on Radostin Kishishev, Chris Perry and Shaun Bartlett.

But the tactical changes initially failed to stir Charlton and it was Leeds who increased their lead.

Leeds favourite Smith, who had shown his usual endeavour, scored from the penalty spot after Michael Duberry had been brought down by Charlton's Jonathan Fortune.

But Leeds defender Duberry was guilty of conceding a soft penalty at the other end when he tripped Euell and the Charlton forward got up to dispatch the spot-kick.

Charlton sensed that there was a way back into the game and surged forward in search of the equaliser.

And, given the calamitous nature of Leeds' defending, it did not take the visitors long to find the net.

Charlton punted the ball forward and Leeds failed in quite spectacular fashion to clear their lines, with Duberry the main culprit.

After a mix-up with Robinson, Duberry knocked the ball into the path of Euell, who duly converted from a yard out to condemn Leeds to life in Division One next season.
