Bolton 1-0 Portsmouth
Kevin Davies struck the winner for Bolton and plunged Portsmouth further into relegation trouble.

Pompey goalkeeper Shaka Hislop allowed Davies' weak shot from Nicky Hunt's right-wing cross to creep under his body and into the net.

Aiyegbeni Yakubu went closest to grabbing an equaliser for the visitors, but his shot struck the post.

Pompey's miserable afternoon was compounded by the sending-off of Dejan Stefanovic for abusive language.

Spanish striker Javi Moreno was called into the Bolton starting-line up for the first time.

And Moreno, on loan from Atletico Madrid, almost made the breakthrough for Bolton on six minutes when Youri Djorkaeff clipped the ball back.

The Spaniard's effort carried enough power but it went the wrong side of the post.

The pair then linked again three minutes later with Moreno heading across the face of the goal.

KEY MOMENTS
53 mins: Davies gives Bolton the lead
58 mins: Yakubu hits the post with a deflected shot
91 mins: Stefanovic sees red for swearing

Portsmouth struggled in the opening period, with their passing wayward but Bolton, despite having plenty of possession, failed to take full control.

Indeed, Arjan De Zeeuw surged forward for Portsmouth and got on the end of a cross from Alex Smertin.

But his shot from the edge of the area carried little power and goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelianen was able to gather comfortably.

After the interval, Bolton upped the tempo and their greater sense of urgency soon paid dividends.

Bolton took the lead after a mistake by Hislop, who allowed a weak shot from Davies to go under his body following a cross from Hunt.

Portsmouth almost drew level in the 57th minute when a shot from Yakubu spun off Bolton defender Emerson Thome and hit the post.

There was not much to separate the two sides, but Bolton nearly doubled their advantage on 65 minutes.

The impressive Djorkaeff forced a fine save from Hislop, who turned the Frenchman's close-range shot away for a corner.

Pompey pressed for an equaliser and Yakubu looked the most likely to deliver, but the Nigerian striker was unable to find a way past Bolton's resolute rearguard.

Pompey defender Stefanovic was then sent off in the dying moments of the game for swearing at the referee as Harry Redknapp's poor away record continued.
