Liverpool 3-1 BirminghamLiverpool came from behind to beat a dogged Birmingham team with goals from Steven Gerrard, Harry Kewell and Emile Heskey.
Just past the half-hour Mikael Forssell gave Birmngham the lead converting Robbie Savage's free-kick with a smart finish.
Within two minutes Steven Gerrard equalised with a penalty, after referee Neale Barry judged Florent Sinama-Pongolle had been fouled by Kenny Cunningham, much to Birmingham's fury.
Liverpool dominated the second half and confirmed their superiority with well-taken goals from Kewell and Heskey to secure the three points.
Kewell had been heavily involved from the start, switching wings to great effect.
Another Australian winger, Birmingham's Stan Lazaridis, was also proving a threat, regularly outpacing Salif Diao on the left.
Birmingham created two chances in a minute, first when Christophe Dugarry was clear after a Sami Hyypia mistake and then when Lazaridis got in a flicked header. Both times Chris Kirkland made outstanding saves.
Heskey's strength in possession almost brought the breakthrough for Liverpol when he held off Cunningham to feed El-Hadji Diouf, whose low cross was punched away from Pongolle's lunge at full stretch by Ian Bennett.
On 32 minutes Diao was booked for grounding Lazaridis after a succession of illegal challenges, and from Savage's free-kick Forssell arrived unmarked on the far post to score.
Liverpool were level within two minutes when Sinama-Pongolle's neat turn drew Cunningham into a lunge and Barry pointed to the spot.
With Michael Owen sidelined, Gerrard was the man who stepped up to take the penalty and he drilled it home.
The duel between Sinama-Pongolle and Upson continued and on 50 minutes the Frenchman robbed Upson and sprinted away before laying the ball across for Heskey, who could not get a connection.
The ball broke for Gerrard, whose shot was blocked by Cunningham.

With the game evenly balanced Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier introduced Vladimir Smicer and John Arne Riise, which injected some much needed attacking impetus.
With his first touch of the ball Riise delivered a cross for Kewell, who beat Bennett with a superb diving header.
Heskey extended Liverpool's lead with another smart piece of finishing, controlling the ball on his chest and then hooking the ball past Bennett.
Smicer also produced a cameo performance, his positive running giving the Birmingham defence all sorts of problems.
The Czech Republic international also hit the post late in the game as Liverpool continued to press.
