Leicester outfox Pompey
Leicester's Les Ferdinand
Portsmouth 0-2 Leicester

Leicester strikers Les Ferdinand and Marcus Bent fired Micky Adams' team to an impressive away win over Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Rolling back the years, veteran striker Ferdinand topped off a typically bustling performance with a superb effort just past the half-hour mark to claim his fifth league goal of the season.

Portsmouth rallied after the interval, but their hopes of gaining a foothold in the game were dashed by Marcus Bent's goal on 59 minutes.

Having lost their opening five away games, Adams' side have now picked up six points on their travels, having beaten Manchester City three weeks ago.

Portsmouth's finishing was altogether less impressive, just as it had been against Fulham in last Monday's defeat.

Even so Portsmouth will wonder just how they slipped to defeat having had so much possession.

Yakubu Ayegbini had a penalty shout waved away and Tim Sherwood flashed his header over the crossbar.

Likewise before Ferdinand's goal, Portsmouth had their chances.

Steve Stone's fierce shot was blocked by Steve Howey, while Teddy Sheringham flashed a header wide moments later.

Arjan de Zeeuw proved a handful down the left and the Portsmouth midfielder also tested Walker with a shot.

In between those Portsmouth attacking sorties, Ferdinand's physical presence always provided respite for his team's stretched defence.

KEY MOMENTS
31mins: Les Ferdinand puts Leicester ahead
33 mins: Marcus Bent doubles Leicester's advantage

Leicester had threatened early on when James Scowcroft's cross found Ferdinand on the edge of the area but the former Spurs striker was unable to control the ball and Pompey's defence scrambled to safety.

But the former England forward was rewarded for his persistence when Boris Zivkovic's tackle on Scowcroft resulted in a free-kick which Ferdinand smashed into the net from 30 yards out.

Bent, just before his goal, had forced Harald Wapenaar into an athletic save, but the young striker got the better of Pompey's Dutch goalkeeper, scrambling Muzzy Izzet's free-kick into the net just before hour.

Yakubu was booked for diving as Portsmouth ran out of ideas and Leicester closed out the match in expert style.
