Charlton 0-1 LeedsJames Milner scored the only goal as Leeds produced a rare performance of quality to win for the first time since early October. Leeds thrashed Charlton 6-1 at The Valley last season and it proved to be a happy hunting ground again as United picked up their first win under Eddie Gray.
The visitors hassled and harried high-flying Charlton, who started the day fourth in the Premiership, and fully deserved all three points.
Leeds remain rock bottom, but on the day when rumours intensified about a takeover at the club by a wealthy Sheikh, their performance hinted that there may yet be hope for the club's beleaguered supporters.
Charlton suffered a blow shortly before kick-off when Paolo di Canio withdrew with a groin strain.
But Scott Parker returned after suspension and Claus Jensen from injury.
Leeds made four changes from the team that lost 2-0 at home to Bolton, with Alan Smith, Dominic Matteo, Gary Kelly and Jermaine Pennant all returning.
And Leeds belied their League position with a confident start that soon bore fruit.
The visitors had a good penalty shout rejected for a tug on Smith by Mark Fish before Milner scored. The 17-year-old latched on to a pass from Mark Viduka, creating space with a superb first touch before slipping the ball past Dean Kiely.
Viduka nearly doubled the bottom club's advantage with a impudent effort from close to the by-line that eluded Kiely but was cleared off the line by Radostin Kishishev.
Charlton, shell-shocked by their opponents' display, mustered little before almost equalising after 30 minutes.

Parker picked out Matt Holland at the far post, but the Republic of Ireland midfielder headed against the post and was unable to hit the target with the rebound.
Carlton Cole came on for Charlton at the start of the second half and might have immediately won a penalty after going down under a challenge from Lucas Radebe, but referee Mark Halsey waved play on.
The pattern of the first half soon resumed, with Milner heading over from six yards and a mix-up in the Addicks penalty area almost resulting in a second for the visitors.
Charlton rallied in the closing stages.
Jason Euell, ineffectual like most of his team-mates for the majority of the afternoon, almost produced an equaliser but his volley flew narrowly over the Leeds crossbar.
Cole forced a good save fro m Paul Robinson as Charlton pushed for a late equaliser, but Leeds held on to arrest a run of five straight Premiership defeats.
