Deadlock at the Reebok
Beattie and Okocha did their best to break the stalemate

Bolton 0-0 Southampton

Jay-Jay Okocha inspired Bolton but they were unable to break down a stubborn Southampton defence in a tight game at the Reebok.

Saints had defender Michael Svensson sent off in the dying minutes, but owed a debt to keeper Antti Niemi.

The big Finn emerged the winner from what developed into a personal duel with Okocha.

Okocha took up from where he left off against Tottenham the previous week, when he struck the woodwork three times.

The Nigerian was the early inspiration for the Trotters, picking out former Saint Kevin Davies to nod down for Kevin Nolan to fire over from 25 yards.

After using a 25-yard free-kick as a sighter, Okocha drew a fine save from Niemi with a long-range half-volley.

Okocha then curled a free-kick towards the top corner from 25 yards, only for Niemi to launch himself upwards to save.

Reebok deadlock
18mins: Okocha denied by Niemi.
26mins: Niemi thwarts Okocha again.
54mins: Okocha draws another save from Niemi
61mins: Phillips is denied by Jaaskelainen
82mins: Jardel misses good chance.
88mins: Saints Michael Svensson is sent off.

At the other end, James Beattie's powerfully struck free-kick deflected off Bolton's defensive wall for a corner.

It had all been strictly long-range stuff, until Davies found space in the penalty area, only to chip weakly into Niemi's arms.

The second-half pattern was much the same, with Okocha again drawing another fine save from Niemi.

Kevin Phillips at last provided employment for Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Bolton with a snap shot which the Finnish keeper parried, with Simon Charlton heading the rebound behind for a corner.

Phillips then failed to connect as Rory Delap headed the ball down invitingly for him.

Per Frandsen had the ball in the Southampton net, only for Stelios Giannakopoulos to be ruled offside earlier in the move.

On 61 minutes, Jaaskelainen leaped to his left to beat out Beattie's free-kick while a free-kick at the other end presented Davies with a chance against his old team, but he failed to make contact and Niemi gathered.

Mario Jardel was the centre of attention as the game boiled over in the final minutes.

The former European Golden Boot winner missed a great chance, and then went down spectcularly after being shoved by Michael Svenssson.

Referee Webb showed the Swede a second yellow card, and also booked Jardel for shoving Graeme Le Saux.
