Leeds 2-2 Newcastle | Shearer put Newcastle ahead from the spot |
Alan Shearer rescued a point for Newcastle with a late equaliser against Leeds at Elland Road.
Shearer had put Newcastle ahead from the spot before Mark Viduka and Alan Smith gave the home side a 2-1 lead.
Lee Bowyer was making his Magpies debut at his former club and was booed with every touch before being substituted as Newcastle piled on pressure for an equaliser.
Shearer rewarded the efforts of the visitors when he poked home from close range on the 600th club outing of his career.

Leeds were the quicker to find their stride but survived an early scare when Newcastle striker Laurent Robert failed to find an unmarked Shearer at the far post.
It took Leeds 16 minutes to turn their superiority into a clear-cut chance with Lamine Sakho's trickery helping him get in a cross for Viduka.
Viduka headed the ball down into fellow striker Smith's path but he lashed his close-range shot high.
Sakho was wearing the number 10 shirt of the departed Harry Kewell and made a promising start to his Leeds career on the left of midfield.
The loan signing from Marseille found Smith with a header with 19 minutes gone and this time the England striker's dipping shot was narrowly wide.
Newcastle made the home side pay for squandering their chances when they took the lead courtesy of a slick one-touch passing counter-attack.
Smith's goal almost proved to be the winner |
Former Leeds favourite Bowyer found Craig Bellamy on the inside right flank and he slipped the ball to the on-rushing Dyer, who was brought down in the box by Lucas Radebe.
There was not much doubt about the penalty award and Shearer emphatically converted from 12 yards.
But Leeds were back on level terms four minutes later when Sakho's nod down was powered low and hard into the Newcastle net by Viduka.
Bellamy and Robert went close for the visitors who began to take control just before the interval.
But, after a low key start to the second-half, Leeds were gifted the lead.

Leeds were hanging onto their lead by a thread with keeper Paul Robinson pulling off a vital save from Gary Speed and defender Radebe making a superb overhead goal-line clearance.
