Les Ferdinand returned to haunt Tottenham as West Ham gave their survival hopes a boost with an emphatic victory at Upton Park.

Ferdinand's first goal since his transfer-window move from Spurs put the Hammers on the way to only their second home win of the season.

And a fumble from Spurs keeper Kasey Keller just after the break allowed Michael Carrick to seal three precious points.

Glenn Roeder's side are now level with relegation rivals Bolton, five points clear of West Brom and seven ahead of Sunderland.

Ferdinand, who had scored the winner for Spurs in this fixture last season, proved a real handful for his old team-mates in tandem with Jermain Defoe.

Defoe was promoted to the starting line-up as Paolo Di Canio was suffering from a stomach bug.

And he almost scored after just five minutes when Ferdinand won an aerial challenge and Keller was forced to make a double save.

Keller then punched away a rising shot from Defoe, and did even better to push Bowyer's shot on to his right-hand post.

But the Hammers finally made the breakthrough when Defoe turned Dean Richards and Ledley King on the halfway line and burst forward.

He slipped the ball to Ferdinand on the edge of the area and Keller allowed the striker's shot to squirm under his body and into the net.

Teddy Sheringham had a good chance to equalise for Spurs just before the break when Hammers keeper David James missed Darren Anderton's corner, but his header drifted wide.

Within 90 seconds of the restart, West Ham were two up.

Carrick crossed from the right, King failed to clear and the midfielder was on hand to steer the ball home when Keller fumbled the loose ball.

The Hammers almost scored again on 51 minutes when Ian Pearce won a header at the far post, but Keller scrambled the ball away from under the bar.

Ferdinand went off to a standing ovation with just under half an hour to go and West Ham were happy to play out time as a toothless Spurs attack failed to threaten.
