Kenyon backs Veron to stay
Manchester United's Seba Veron
Veron reportedly rowed with teammates after Euro exit

Are Kenyon and Fergie right? Have your say

Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon has joined manager Sir Alex Ferguson in defence of the team and record purchase Juan Sebastien Veron.

Kenyon claims Veron will still be at Old Trafford next season as he looks to bring an end to the speculation linking the Argentine international with a summer departure.

It has gone on for too long and is undermining everybody, not just Seba, but the team as a whole
Chief Executive Peter Kenyon

Veron has been repeatedly linked with a return to Lazio, from where United bought the midfielder for a British record transfer fee of 28m less than a year ago.

"We are going to look at other ways now of addressing this problem," Kenyon said.

"It has gone on for too long and is undermining everybody, not just Seba, but the team as a whole. That is not acceptable."

Ferguson had launched a furious defence of his team, and in particular Veron, ahead of Wednesday's Premiership title showdown with Arsenal.

Kenyon was reacting to Sunday newspaper reports linking the 27 year-old with a move back to Rome.

Kenyon told the Manchester Evening News, "Seba is a world-class player. He has demonstrated that to us on occasions.

"I have no doubt he will be one of the main players coming out of the World Cup. He is absolute quality.

"What is undermining is the continual focus on him wanting to go and not being happy etc.

Manchester United's 28.1m signing Juan Sebastien Veron
Veron has had his critics this season
"There is nothing to indicate Juan Veron won't be a Manchester United player next season, either from the club or from the player."

Fergie's fury

The player has been criticised for his performances in recent weeks.

It had been reported that Veron rowed with his team mates after the Bayer Leverkusen disappointment and ahead of an imminent move back to Italy.

United and Ferguson are furious with what they see as inaccurate and damaging reporting of Veron's position and insist they will tackle the issue.

Ferguson insisted: "These stories are rubbish. It's lies.

"I don't know why people are doing it and we have taken legal advice."

Ferguson is determined to put as much pressure as possible on Arsenal by winning at Old Trafford and taking the title race to its final day.

He insisted: "We're the best - the goals we scored tell you that."
