Cody McDonald's strike helped Gillingham extend their unbeaten run to 12 league games against Burton Albion.
Sam Winnall put the home side ahead, heading Andrew Corbett's cross from the right past Alan Julian.
Adebayo Akinfenwa forced a fine save from Adam Legzdins after the break with a sharp turn and shot as the Gills pressed for an equaliser.
McDonald secured a share of the points, collecting Dennis Oli's flick before firing past Legzdins.
Burton Albion manager Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby: "It's turned out to be a decent point. I thought the boys worked hard and they closed people down.
"Defensively, I thought we blocked shots when we had to and they threw their bodies on the line. It was a team which was scrapping which is what you want to see.
"We could have passed the ball a bit better in the second half; we could have kept possession better, but they didn't cause that many problems when they got the ball. I thought we coped well in general, but then a bit of magic from the boy McDonald and they got the equaliser, but it was probably a fair result.
Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent: "I'm a bit disappointed, we feel this is a missed opportunity. First half we didn't get going, why we started like that I don't know.
"We're full of confidence but we didn't look like that first half.
"Second half we were a different side and should have gone on to win the game.
"I know results have gone well but that makes it harder to take, we have to take these opportunities."
