Clayton Donaldson scored his 20th goal of the season as Crewe Alexandra beat League Two leaders Chesterfield.
Donaldson gave Crewe a first-half lead after bamboozling Gregor Roberston and netting with a low finish.
The visitors came close to an equaliser when Danny Whitaker's curling effort hit the post and Jack Lester blazed a shot over from the rebound.
Substitute Danny Shelley secured victory for the home side late on with a low free-kick from 25 yards out.
Crewe manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "We lived dangerously for a little spell there were a couple of incidents in the second half, but I thought we grew in to the game and defended very well.
"Neil (Baker) watched them play last week and it was his idea to pressurise up the pitch which we were happy to do, and I thought we did that very well."
"There were two pieces of real quality. I have to say for the first goal, I don't think Clayton's (Donaldson) scored a better goal than that."
Chesterfield boss John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's disappointing because I don't want to lose any games but I'm pleased with the way we played.
"We tried to pass the ball on a tricky pitch. This is one of our best performances away from home even though we've lost.
"If we had that little bit of luck in the chances we created then it could have been a different game. "
