Striker Davies is Chesterfield's top scorer this season
Gary Johnson was denied his first points as Northampton manager by a classy Chesterfield performance.
Craig Davies should have opened the scoring in the first few minutes, but he blazed over from from two yards out.
Davies eventually made amends, firing in after Jack Lester's shot was palmed away, before Lester slotted home Scott Griffiths' cutback from the left wing.
Cobblers defender John Johnson set up a tense finish, heading in Michael Jacobs' corner.
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I think we just got at them a little bit, we put them under pressure, played the ball early and we created one or two opportunities.
"It was an excellent performance. Sometimes it's not about playing great, it's about what you get at the end of the game and we got three points.
"We've got to try and win as many games as possible and that's what we're going to carry on doing."
Northampton Town manager Gary Johnson tells BBC Radio Northampton: "It was a defeat against the team top of the league by 11 points so they've beaten other sides throughout the season.
"However, we still have that soft underbelly and I'm not going to change that in a month or two.
"I gave a few home truths to a few individuals. They need to improve that themselves and then maybe we'll be a force."
