Crewe striker Clayton Donaldson scored a hat-trick as they beat Burton for their first win in seven games.
Donaldson cut inside Ryan Austin before beating ex-Alex keeper Adam Legzdins at his near post for the first.
Shaun Miller fired low into the far corner to make it 2-0 and Donaldson got his second from a twice-taken penalty after Brewers players encroached.
Sam Winnall rifled into the roof of the net to give Burton hope but Donaldson tapped in from close range to seal it.
Crewe manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "When the third goal went in, I said to Paul Peschisolido [Burton manager] that we were having a whole season's luck in one game.
"We set ourselves up to counter attack in the second half, which I thought we did quite well.
"I thought we defended well, considering the back four that we had got wasn't a back four that we had played before."
Burton Albion manager Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby:
"It's the story of our season, inconsistency.
"I actually thought we started the game really well but were two down after six minutes.
"I still felt at 2-0 down - and you can call me crazy - I still thought we could go on and win the game."
