Nicky Wroe's first-half strike secured a deserved victory against Stevenage and took Shrewsbury into second spot in League Two.
Wroe was twice denied by away keeper Chris Day in the first half, before Lionel Ainsworth's cross allowed him to net from 12 yards out on 38 minutes.
The Shrews went close to doubling the lead when Shane Cansdell-Sherriff's header hit the bar after the break.
Luke Daley could have equalised late on, but blazed wide from 18 yards out.
