Aaron Webster's early goal gave Burton Albion victory and extended League Two leaders Chesterfield's winless run to four games.
Webster stunned the visitors by curling home his ninth goal of the season from 20 yards in the fifth minute.
Spirites goalkeeper Tommy Lee had to twice deny Calvin Zola before Burton's Adam Legzdins saved from Dwayne Mattis.
Zola and Webster had further chances after the break, while Chesterfield's Jordan Bowery fired wired late on.
The win sees Burton climb out of the relegation zone, while Chesterfield remain five points ahead of second-placed Wycombe, who have two games in hand.
Burton Albion manager Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby: "We looked like the only side who were going to win the game.
"We've done it against other teams too but if you don't score at the right times they can get one opportunity, the ball goes over the top and they get one in.
"This time it went in the side netting, but we've got to start to kill teams off."
