Shrewsbury youngster Jon Taylor scored his first two goals as the promotion chasers saw off Burton.
Burton dominated a goalless first half, with Calvin Zola denied by a goalline clearance and a save.
But Taylor opened the scoring with a well-struck effort from the edge of the area and added a second after blocking a clearance which rebounded in.
And recalled striker Matt Harrold made sure of the win, collecting a pass from Mark Wright and drilling home.
Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire: "I'm delighted for Jon Taylor. He's a brave little lad who doesn't half work hard for the side.
"He took his first goal very well. I'm not sure he knew much about the second but he was in there.
"As for the third, Matt Harrold was in desperate need of a goal, but his overall performance was good - he got hold of the ball and competed well in the air too.
"We lived a bit dangerously in the first half, but once we got the goal we settled down nicely."
Burton Albion manager Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby: "It's the same old story, isn't it? In the first half, we go out and perform really well. We got a number of chances, we should be putting in the back of the net and then they get one shot on goal and they score and we crumble.
"I'm disappointed in the manner we crumbled, but there was enough in the first half to suggest we should've gone on to win the game.
"But if you don't play for the full 90 minutes, you're not going to win games."
