Jim Gannon got his first win as Port Vale manager after his team recorded a hard-fought victory over Rotherham.
The Millers' best chance fell to Adam Le Fondre, whose close-range shot was straight at Vale keeper Chris Martin.
Valiants loanee Jay O'Shea struck the post with a free-kick, before scoring the game's only goal with a brilliant volley from 20 yards out.
Justin Richards should have doubled the home side's lead, but he scooped the ball over the crossbar from 10 yards.
Port Vale manager Jim Gannon told BBC Radio Stoke: "I'm delighted for everyone at the club, especially the players, because you could see tonight that the commitment was there.
"The players have given a tremendous effort tonight, every one of them, and when everyone gives that effort and plays with a touch of quality then you have a real chance of winning games.
"It's a step in the right direction and I'm sure what the lads want to do is build on this now."
Rotherham United boss Ronnie Moore told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I thought it was a very even contest to be honest, especially the first half, where I thought we had the best of it.
"We huffed and puffed a bit going forward which is normally our strength, I think the five attacking players really weren't at their best today.
"We didn't get enough from the front three, well the front two and the two wide men. They're our way of winning games if you like, and when they are not quite all firing, it's very unusual."
