Wycombe Wanderers withstood a late barrage from Rotherham United to close in on League Two leaders Chesterfield.
Gareth Ainsworth headed home Danny Foster's whipped cross to give the home side the lead.
The visitors laid siege to Wycombe's goal with Ryan Taylor going close with a downward header which was tipped onto the bar by keeper Nicky Bull.
The Millers' frustration grew and Jason Taylor picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Ben Strevens late on.
Wycombe manager Gary Waddock told BBC Three Counties Radio: "The performance was very good. We showed a little bit of everything. We showed both sides today.
"We are in a good position and it was an important result for us today, but as important was the performance.
"All across the team and every member of the bench has played a part in that result today."
Rotherham United manager Ronnie Moore told BBC Radio Sheffield: "Well we deserved something there's no doubt about that but you can't the way we did.
"We let them come inside too often, they've got a left winger and a left back, both right-footed, and we've allowed them to come inside and whip that ball into the back post, it's criminal really.
"Second half we've come out and dominated. These sort of games are always going to be tight."
