Luke Rooney's late strike earned Gillingham a point at Torquay.
Gulls top scorer Elliott Benyon pounced when visiting keeper Alan Julian spilled Eunan O'Kane's shot to fire his side into the lead.
Julian made amends to save well from Danny Stevens' fine effort, before the winger wasted a great chance later on and Mark Ellis headed over.
Gulls' keeper Scott Bevan made a great double save but the visitors levelled through Rooney's deflected effort.
Torquay United manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon: "First and foremost I must apologise, it's my 200th game today at Torquay United and it's not very nice to be sent to the stands, so I apologise for that.
"The respect campaign I'm all for it, but they (referees) have to know that managers have a job to do as well, and they've got to get it right.
"Why should I stand there and see my team kick the ball back to the opposition and then the referee decide that there's a drop ball in the middle of the 18-yard box, I'm not going to have that - it's not on."
Gillingham assistant manager Ian Hendon told BBC Radio Kent: "The balance of the game was quite strange. They scored early on, a bit of a sloppy goal on our part, but we settled down and on chances we could have been three or four goals to the good at half-time.
"To be fair to Torquay they played better football than we did at times in the second half but the boys dug in.
"Rooney looked dangerous and we got something from the game that on balance I thought was deserved."
