A Shaun Miller goal ensured Crewe inflicted a first home league defeat since May on Shrewsbury Town.
Crewe could have taken the lead in the first half when a Clayton Donaldson shot went narrowly wide.
The goal came midway through the second half when Matt Tootle crossed and the unmarked Miller had time to side-foot home inside the area.
Shrewsbury almost equalised late on but Lee Bell cleared substitute Steve Leslie's header off the line.
Crewe manager Dario Gradio told BBC Radio Stoke: "I thought they played exceptionally well but having said that, we didn't work their goalkeeper enough.
"If only we could score from a free kick or corner we would be right up there.
"We weren't as good in the last third as we might have been."
