Goals from Barry Corr and Sean Clohessy handed Southend victory at Oxford.
Corr fired in the opener through a crowd of players on the rebound after Blair Sturrock's shot was blocked.
And the Blues wrapped it up in fortuitous fashion when Clohessy's long, looping cross evaded keeper Ryan Clarke and went in off the post.
Oxford were barely in the game but James Constable sent a header wide when well placed, while Steve MacLean saw his header come back off the upright.
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "It's pleasing that the last two games some of the players have started to listen.
"We needed to make sure we kept a clean sheet in the second half and the boys worked very hard.
"I thought the front two were excellent in pressurising people and worked their tails off to get us up the football pitch.
