Wycombe Wanderers striker Ben Strevens came up with a late winner to leave bottom club Hereford United still four points adrift in League Two.
Mathieu Manset thought he had rescued a point at Adams Park on 79 minutes when he fired in from the edge of the box.
But Strevens found the top corner three minutes from time to claim the points.
Veteran Gareth Ainsworth had put the Chairboys ahead late on in the first half, firing into the bottom corner through a crowded penalty area.
Wycombe rise to fifth in the table, rewarding their efforts to get the fixture played - the only game of the day to beat the weather in League Two.
But it was tough on the Bulls, who had deservedly levelled through Manset's eighth strike of the season.
Hereford adapted quickly to the conditions, Nicky Featherstone and Manset both going close before Rob Purdie's deflected drive came back off the bar.
With Purdie forced off because of a hamstring injury, Kevin Betsy began to make use of some space down the left. And, two minutes before the break, one of his crosses reached Ainsworth, who drove home his fourth goal of the season.
Ainsworth's cross was then headed just wide by Stuart Beavon and Chris Westwood had a goal disallowed as Wycombe piled on the pressure at the start of the second period.
But Hereford struck back when Manset clipped in Joe Colbeck's cross.
It was Strevens who had the last word, however, crashing in Beavon's cross three minutes from time.
Wycombe Wanderers manger Gary Waddock told BBC Three Counties Radio: "We don't like to play that way [long ball] at all.
"Sometimes that happens, but we don't want to play that way at all.
"There are occasions when we need to and we got the result and we didn't play particularly well."
Hereford manager Jamie Pitman told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "Without having brilliant chances we had our fair share of opportunities in good areas and we should have done better.
"But we have got to start keeping clean sheets as we have kept hardly any this season and that is our problem.
"We've had our chances and we've scored a goal but we have conceded too many again."
