Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Rhys Taylor saved a penalty as they held off a late Morecambe fightback to secure victory.
Clayton Donaldson gave the visitors an early lead with a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Byron Moore doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when he latched onto Shaun Miller's low cross.
Morecambe's Phil Jevons missed from the spot after Matt Tootle had handled in the area before substitute Chris Shuker fired in a late consolation.
Crewe manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "We worked hard for it but did our usual - missed a million chances, some really easy ones.
"I thought that was one of our worst displays of the season when we had the ball.
"Really we were lucky, our goalkeeper came to the rescue again with a great penalty save."
