Ten-man Accrington Stanley held out for a point at Southend following the sending-off of Peter Murphy.
Jimmy Ryan's superb 25-yard free-kick gave the visitors the lead.
The Shrimpers equalised when Bilel Moshni headed home Sofiene Zaaboub's free-kick before Murphy was sent off for a foul on Anthony Grant.
Southend thought they had snatched the victory in injury time but Harry Crawford's close range effort was ruled out for offside.
Southend boss Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "I'm very disappointed with the amount of possession we had of the ball.
"There was players out there not thinking about the game, not thinking about their positions.
"Lose a goal and everybody thinks they have to do more, if they just stuck to their jobs as a unit of 11 - it makes us very difficult to have a shape and a blend."
