Burton subjected 10-man Chesterfield to their first home league defeat of the season thanks to a second-half Shaun Harrad winner.
The visitors took the lead when James Collins dispossessed Jack Hunt and raced on to fire low past Tommy Lee.
The Spireites hit back when Adam Bolder deflected Derek Niven's shot into his own net from eight yards out.
But after Niven was sent off for a professional foul Burton won it courtesy of Harrad's shot on the turn.
And it was nothing more than the visitors deserved following a dominant second-half display which saw them in the ascendancy even before Niven's departure.
Collins, playing as a lone striker, had a golden opportunity to double his tally but screwed a left foot shot badly wide after finding himself in an excellent position inside the Chesterfield area.
Lee, who was in impressive form, then pulled off a good save to deny Russell Penn.
Chesterfield could have had a second when Craig Davies' effort was cleared off the line by Scott Malone.
But Burton closed out the game for a deserved victory.
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I'm disappointed we lost the game.
"I thought we played well in patches but I don't think we really got going after the poor start from us."
"We just switched off at times but I can't fault their effort."
Burton Albion manager Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby: "It feels fantastic. They were unbeaten at home and we hadn't won away, so it was kind of written. I thought the performance was excellent.
"I thought we grafted extremely hard. They're a good side and they put us under pressure at times.
"In the second half, I think we had two or three chances within the first five minutes to put it to rest, but we kept plugging away and lo and behold, Shaun Harrad comes on and comes up with the goods and we're all really happy."
