Crewe ended their run of five consecutive draws with an impressive victory at Southend.
The hosts saw efforts from Anthony Grant and Waide Fairhurst cleared off the line in an open first-half.
After Ashley Westwood's penalty had come back off the crossbar, Crewe took a second-half lead when Donaldson headed home Luke Murphy's centre.
The visitors doubled their advantage when sub Shaun Miller volleyed in from another Luke Murphy cross.
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock tells BBC Essex: "I'm not prepared today to take any blame for that performance and result - that was a passionless performance.
"Fans come to the football game, they pay their money, they work very hard through the week and what they should expect is attitude and work rate.
"Too many of our players did not show that passion today and that's the reason we're sat here with the defeat."
