Scott Boden's injury-time goal gave Chesterfield victory over Southend and moved them to within a point of League Two leaders Port Vale.
Danny Whitaker opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Graham Coughlan had brought down Jack Lester.
The Shrimpers got themselves level when Anthony Grant found the bottom corner.
Southend twice hit the woodwork through Matt Paterson and Louie Soares, but it was Boden who snatched the win for the hosts from close range at the death.
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I think we were fortunate to win the game, I'll admit that.
"It's typical of the players, it's full credit to the players that they've gone right to the end and they've got the reward.
"I think you'd admit we are quite exciting to watch, well at home we are, and we've been creating problems for teams. Teams are going to come and we make it very difficult."
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "Football kicks you in the teeth at times and if you don't take your chances that's exactly what happens.
"I thought for 85 minutes we were absolutely fantastic, but the last five or six we tried to saunter out the game and we've paid the penalty for it.
"If there's anybody to blame for what happened today, I'm going to have to put my hand up because I do feel the substitutions were maybe made at the wrong time, but that's with hindsight."
