Marvin Morgan's late strike gifted Aldershot a slightly fortuitous win over a dangerous Torquay side.
Jamie Young had a fine game in goal for the away side as he brilliantly saved both Eunan O'Kane's and Chris Zebroski's goal-bound drives.
The visitors then hit the woodwork when Anthony Straker's cross-cum-shot came back off the angle.
The Shots went on to steal it with four minutes to go when Morgan slotted past Gulls keeper Scott Bevan.
Torquay United manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon: "I can't be disappointed tonight, we were magnificent and brilliant in every department, the only thing that eluded us was a goal.
"We were at it all over the pitch - we just couldn't beat an Aldershot keeper who was in inspired form.
"I'm proud of the players, we've got a lot here to work with and we'll keep going."
Aldershot manager Kevin Dillon told BBC Surrey: "I don't think we rode our luck. I thought we defended really well.
"Torquay's energy levels were amazing in closing down but in the end we looked the stronger team. For a bit more thought around the 18-yard box we could have had another.
"The back four must have headed the ball about a hundred times tonight because they're pretty direct. But we handled it."
