Gillingham failed to take their chances as they were held to their fourth draw of the season by determined Southend.
Visiting keeper Glenn Morris enjoyed a fine evening as he kept out Cody McDonald's early effort.
And after Josh Simpson had missed Southend's best chance of the game, Gillingham dominated the second half.
Wasteful McDonald twice fired wide and Adebayo Akinfenwa was also guilty of poor finishing, while Morris also saved from Chris Palmer.
Gills assistant manager Ian Hendon told BBC Radio Kent: "It was a battling point, a hard-fought contest, Southend are a big strong side and we matched them for that.
"There were quite a few chances for both sides and I think a draw was a fair result.
"I thought we got our act together a bit more in the second half.
"Obviously we would like to be scoring a lot of goals but it's not happening. Yes we're disappointed but if it looked like we weren't going to score then we would be worried."
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "I was very pleased with the first half and very disappointed not to come in up after that.
"They pinned us back for the last 25 minutes and there were two very good chances towards the end for us.
"I think a point is probably fair."
