Jack Midson took advantage of an error from Cheltenham goalkeeper Scott Brown to earn a draw for Oxford.
The Robins were the better team in the first half and deservedly led when Wes Thomas's header from Danny Andrew's cross looped over Ryan Clarke.
U's substitute Leigh Franks almost scored an own goal but Clarke kept out his attempted clearance.
And Oxford maintained their unbeaten away run in the league when Midson tapped home from a Brown fumble.
Cheltenham Town boss Mark Yates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "Sometimes that happens [Brown's error] and you've got to deal with it and you have to think about if it keeps happening you have to do something about it.
"Scott's got my backing, but that cost us - there's no hiding from the fact.
"We were excellent and until they [Oxford] scored they hadn't put a passage of play together, they hadn't had a shot at goal and then to be fair to them they were probably on top."
