Craig Davies scored twice, one of them a belter, as Chesterfield maintained their unbeaten start to the season.
Drew Talbot's left-foot cracker into the top corner, his first goal of the season, put the Spireites ahead.
Davies doubled the lead with a close range volley three minutes after the break before his spectacular second.
Davies bettered Talbot's opener when he smashed into the top right corner from 25 yards to wrap up the points and send John Sheridan's side up into third.
That took the much-travelled former Verona, Wolves and Oldham striker's tally for the season to four.
Chesterfield also hit the woodwork three times as they sealed a fourth straight home win - to equal the club's best start to a season.
And they outplayed a Cheltenham side who started the day just two points behind them in seventh - but have still not won away from home now since early April.
Talbot was unlucky not to add a second goal himself when he rattled the bar from 20 yards, while Dean Morgan hit the post and JJ Melligan had a shot saved by Tommy Lee.
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I'm pleased for the players. They've put a lot of effort in and I thought we played really well."
"We could have scored more goals but the most important thing is the three points"
"It's great scoring three but I'm pleased with the clean sheet. It's a good habit winning with clean sheets."
Cheltenham Town boss Mark Yates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "We've got to learn and the way they played is how we have to aspire to play in this division, we were beaten by a much better team on the day"
"We saw our boys with their inexperience thinking how do we come back from this, we've got to be better in the next couple games"
"Not only were they good with the ball they were good without it and in the end I'm happy that it was only 3-0"
