Luke Murphy rescued a point for Crewe against Burton, who preserved their unbeaten home record.
The home side dominated early on and should have gone in front when Richard Walker fired wide from close range.
Albion eventually took the lead when Walker set up Jacques Maghoma, who fired in from 20 yards out.
Joel Grant had a goal disallowed for offside for the visitors, who did find an equaliser when Murphy slotted home from inside the penalty area.
Burton defender Neil Austin told BBC Radio Derby: "I think we dominated and could have been more than 1-0 up at half-time.
"They came out in the second-half and had a lot more possession, I think 1-0 was probably a fair result.
"We could have won it. We had great chances and if we had gone in at 2-0 up at half-time, we could have gone on and won the game."
