Port Vale kept up their fine start to the season by seeing off Aldershot to record their fourth win in six games.
Gary Roberts scored the only goal with a deflected 20-yard strike that left Shots goalkeeper Jamie Young helpless.
The visitors had the better of the second half and Anthony Straker missed a glorious chance to equalise when he headed wide from six yards.
At the other end, substitute Louis Dodds nearly made it 2-0, but was denied by a brilliant save from Young.
Aldershot manager Kevin Dillon told BBC Surrey: "I think the most die-hard Port Vale fan would say they were fortunate to win. We were unlucky not to get anything out of it.
"That was probably our best performance of the season without getting anything from it.
"We're not scoring goals but that will come. It's just about getting that break. The players believe in what we're doing and I do."
