Steven Schumacher endured a disastrous return to his former side as Crewe easily overcame Bury.
Shaun Miller put Alex ahead after pouncing on Efe Sodje's block before Dave Artell powered home a header to double the advantage.
Bury looked powerless to respond and matters were only made worse when Schumacher was sent off.
Luke Murphy drilled home a third before Bury keeper Cameron Belford saved Clayton Donaldson's late penalty.
Bury manager Alan Knill told BBC Radio Manchester: "It's one of those where you don't forget what's happened but you have to quickly put in behind you as it was our first poor performance.
"I don't think it's time to panic but I think it's time to think about the performance and decide some changes next week.
"I have great belief in the players but today we haven't turned up and haven't played well and I know that we'll turn this performance today around."
