Cheltenham kept up with the play-off pack thanks to Wesley Thomas's second half strike against Stevenage.
The Boro dominated large spells of the game but were punished for not taking their chances when Thomas headed home Shaun Jeffers's cross.
Robins keeper Scott Brown preserved the lead by producing a magnificent save to deny Yemi Obubade's diving header.
Frustrations grew amongst the visiting side and Laurie Wilson was sent off late on for a second bookable offence.
Cheltenham Town Manager Mark Yates tells BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "It was the best result of the season because we got a clean sheet.
"We were much more solid and organised at the back. A 1-0 scoreline is a proper scoreline against a strong and organised team."
"Gallers [Andy Gallinah] was almost going to get back into my team, he knew that, but he had to wait for his moment.
"Today he showed how good he is for us. I can ask him to play anywhere, and I thought he was outstanding, along with the whole of my back four."
Stevenage manager Graham Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio: "Possession was dominated by ourselves and you have to say we were unfortunate with one or two decisions.
"We did the same at Bradford, dominated the game and didn't get the result. I think our attacking play needs a little bit more of an edge to it.
"Not a million miles away from a winning performance, but certainly some work to do."
