Danny Spiller's late goal earned Gillingham a deserved point away at Sammy McIllroy's Morecambe.
Craig Stanley put the home side ahead after ghosting into the area to head home Mark Duffy's cross.
Spiller grabbed the visitors a point when he headed Chris Palmer's free-kick past keeper Barry Roche.
A clever run by Spiller had him well-placed to fire home a dramatic winner in stoppage time but he could only volley over the bar.
Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent: "It's such a frustrating game at times football. They're down because we should have won the game.
"Lance Cronin's kit isn't even dirty because he's not had a shot to save. He's had to pick the ball out of the net from one header and at the end you hear that the man-of-the-match is their goalkeeper.
"But the criticism of us is that we have to take our chances. We had some fantastic opportunities - I'd be interested to see how many shots at goal we had. On another given day we could have won the game 4 or 5-1."
