Goals from Barry Corr and Anthony Grant secured 10-man Southend a first win of the season at Bradford.
The visitors, who had taken only one point from three games, went ahead when Corr took a pass from Ryan Hall and lobbed home keeper Jon McLaughlan.
Grant then doubled their lead with a low drive from 25 yards.
Southend were reduced to 10 men late on when Sean Clohessy was sent off for a second bookable offence, but Bradford posed little threat.
James Hanson missed their best first-half chance, shooting wide of advancing Shrimpers keeper Glenn Morris.
Gareth Evans also had a presentable opening six minutes from time, only to send the ball wide of the angle of post and bar.
Bradford City manager Peter Taylor told BBC Radio Leeds: "There's a lot to think about because I put the team together and they played as poorly as that and in every way we were second best.
"I said to the players that I'll take full responsibility for that because I'm the one that's put them together. I think there was a lack of running, lack of experience and a lack of noise.
"We're looking a very, very poor team at the minute but, as I say, I take full responsibility because that is nowhere near good enough and they looked like frightened players. I can't understand why because playing a game of football can't be as serious as that."
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "Both teams looked a bit tired as the game unwound, but we came out the traps with two or three chances where we should have done better.
"But I'm really pleased. This is a squad who have all come together and team bonding is really important.
"Football wins are what bonds them and gels them together and I'm just really delighted to get the three points."
