Port Vale comfortably eased past Southend to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
Justin Richards opened the scoring when he nodded home Marc Richards' pinpoint cross from close range.
Louis Dodds doubled the visitors' advantage with a tap-in after Sean Rigg's effort had been blocked.
Marc Richards' shot from the edge of the area secured the points, with Gareth Owen's late own goal proving only a consolation for Southend.
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "I think at the end of the day if you are a supporter of a football club, the expectation levels are that there is an attitude and a workrate which I didn't see in the team today.
"We'll get it right, and hopefully people will understand and get a reality check.
"I know my players are going to have to face that reality check - we are nowhere near the standard."
