Dwayne Mattis netted a late leveller to earn Chesterfield a point and make Port Vale pay for a host of missed chances.
The game should have been over by half-time as the home side dominated.
John McCombe had already seen a shot cleared off the line by the time Marc Richards ran onto a long ball to put Vale ahead with a cool finish.
Richards then hit the bar with a header while Justin Richards also hit the woodwork but Mattis made it 1-1 with a shot from close range on 79 minutes.
Drew Talbot could even have snatched an ill-deserved win for the visitors but his shot was brilliantly saved by Stuart Tomlinson.
