Bury secured their first victory of the season at Oxford thanks to a late winner from striker Ryan Lowe.
After a quiet opening quarter, Bury defender Tom Lees put the Shakers in front with a close-range header.
The lead lasted only five minutes, as Jack Midson equalised for the hosts with a neat finish.
With the game heading for a stalemate, Andy Haworth set up last term's top scorer Lowe, who neatly rounded U's goalkeeper Ryan Clarke and rolled home.
Bury manager Alan Knill told BBC Radio Manchester:
"We made pretty hard work of it but it was a great free-kick and a great finish from Lowe after a pretty good move.
"We're happy to take three points as it gets us up and running but not just. Probably not many would have given us a chance as this is a really tough place to come.
"We can get a lot better. We've just said in the changing room 'Yes, it's fantastic to win' but we can play better than we did today."
