An early Matt Harold goal was enough to give Shrewsbury Town the points against Macclesfield Town.
Harold slotted home from eight yards after just three minutes following Mat Sadler's pull-back.
The Shrews were unlucky not to double their lead when Ben van den Broek's shot hit the underside of the crossbar.
Lacklustre Macc almost grabbed an injury-time equaliser but Hamza Bencherif's shot was cleared off the line by Daniel O'Donnell.
Macclesfield manager Gary Simpson told BBC Radio Manchester: "They got an early goal and then sat in and tried to catch us on the break.
"I thought we had the majority of the play and possession and enough balls in the box but to be fair they've got some experience at the back and they held in well.
"I think we've got some terrific young players and they are going to learn and they'll need a bit of time but I hope the supporters keep backing them like they've done today."
Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire: "We had to grind out that result with some brave defending at times, some hard work and some intelligence.
"We defended well as a team, and I can't recall our goalkeeper making too many saves - and that's perhaps testament to the performance we put in.
"And there was a bit of skill from Mat Sadler to get round the back for Matt Harrold, who worked tremendously hard, for the goal that won the game."
