Ryan Kendall's second-half strike gave in-form Bradford victory at Crewe.
City went close early on when Gareth Edwards's glancing header was kept out by a fine Adam Legzdins reaction stop.
Legzdins also kept out two drives from Adam Bolder while, at the other end, John McLaughlin tipped Ashley Westwood's free-kick on to the bar.
Kendall came off the bench to score the Bantams' winner, meeting Michael Flynn's quick free-kick and slipping the ball under the advancing Legzdins.
Crewe manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke:
"I was expecting better than that, so if that's a sign of things to come we're going to have a bit of hard work to do again.
"Our goalkeeper made a lot of good saves, had he not then we could have easily lost four or five.
"We were making mistakes all over the place; Patrick (Ada) who's done well was messing around in his own six yard box and gave them a chance and Matt Tootle gave them numerous chances by getting caught in possession stupidly."
