Lincoln beat play-off chasing Bury to ensure their League Two survival.
The visitors had the better of the first half with Lincoln keeper Rob Burch tipping over a goal-bound effort from striker Andy Morrell.
And Bury then wasted a great chance when Mike Jones blazed over after a flowing, five-man move.
South African-born forward Davide Somma grabbed the goal on 80 minutes as he ran onto a ball from Clark Keltie and calmly beat Cameron Belford.
Lincoln City manager Chris Sutton told BBC Lincolnshire:
"On balance we probably didn't deserve to win the game. In the first half we didn't offer the threat which we should have done.
"We went for an attacking line-up although it probably didn't seem that way. We defended stoutly and when we did get in behind them we scored.
"We began to tire in the last 15 minutes and I wondered if we would hold out but if you stick at things and show belief that can take you a long way.
"It's been tough and we need to be far better for next season. There are a lot of things we need to sort out. I aspire to be a good manager and I'm going to do my all to move this club forward."
Bury manager Alan Knill told BBC Radio Manchester: "What counts is what happens in the penalty boxes and when we had our chances we didn't take them and they've had one chance and taken it.
"We should be at least walking away with a point but we haven't and a lapse in concentration has cost us.
"Every time we've had a chance to extend our lead we've come up short. And we are where we are because of how we are."
