Dean Morgan's dramatic late winner boosted Aldershot's play-off hopes and left Cheltenham still needing a point to guarantee their League Two survival.
Justin Richards put the home side ahead from the spot after Barry Hayles was felled by goalkeeper Jamie Young.
Scott Donnelly levelled for Aldershot from another penalty, awarded after Richards was penalised for handball.
The Shots piled forward and Anthony Charles hit the bar with a header before Morgan slammed in the winner.
Aldershot manager Kevin Dillon told BBC Sussex:
"The crowd got really behind the lads and lifted them at the end, they kept going and we did.
"The players are not getting too carried away. It's in our hands and down to us now - we've put the club into a fantastic position and it'll be nice if we do get in the play-offs."
