Darlington's relegation from the Football League was confirmed despite an impressive win at Rochdale who were knocked off the top spot.
Defeat left the Quakers 19 points from safety while Notts County leapfrogged Dale with a win over Lincoln.
Nathan Mulligan's scored the only goal of the game when he glanced in Josh Gray's delivery from the right.
Rochdale went close through Joe Thompson whose angled drive flew fractionally wide of the upright.
Late efforts by Gary Jones, Chris Dagnall and Chris O'Grady were kept out by a resolute Darlington defence.
Darlington have lost 28 games in total, including seven in the first nine, and have had seen three managers take charge of the team this season - Colin Todd, Steve Staunton and Simon Davey.
