Rotherham did their hopes of automatic promotion the power of good with a hard-fought victory to swap league places with promotion rivals Bury.
The Millers dominated the first half but could not turn pressure into goals.
By contrast, Bury never managed an effort on target and their only serious attempt at goal saw Tom Elliott head high over the crossbar.
Rotherham's pressure paid off 10 minutes from time when Josh Walker buried a low, 25-yard drive.
Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"At the end of the day, its about the result. We played well.
"It would have been nice to make it a little bit easier but I've got nothing but praise for my team.
"Great result for us. If we do our job then we shouldn't be looking at anything else."
Bury boss Alan Knill told BBC Radio Manchester:
"I thought it looked like a 0-0 all over, and it took a good strike from the edge of the box to beat us.
"I thought we competed and at the end there I thought we could nick something, but at the moment it's just not going for us.
"It is such a fine line that Rotherham shoot, it goes in the corner, we head it, and it hits the bar.
"We have to be stronger mentally and believe in what we do, and how we do it, because it's proven."
