A late goal from striker Clayton Donaldson grabbed a point for Crewe after Torquay had dominated the early part of their meeting at Plainmoor.
United went ahead as Scott Rendell's first-time strike sent Chris Zebronski's cross flying past Steve Phillips in the visitors' goal.
Lee Mansell then fired over for the hosts before Zebronski went close.
Shaun Miller missed a penalty for Crewe after a Mark Ellis foul but made amends by cleverly setting up Donaldson.
Torquay United manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon:
"I think on reflection of the whole 90 minutes I felt we were in control for probably 70 which is quite a chunk of the game.
"We were hoping to get more than a one-goal cushion for our troubles and I felt that we deserved more.
"Crewe are a very good side who spent a lot of money in the summer so we can't be too disappointed as that's six unbeaten."
Crewe manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke:
"That goal looked like coming, especially with having the penalty just before"
"I'm surprised that our supporters were that united against my decision to take Calvin (Zola) off.
"Really we should have won the game if we had converted the penalty."
