Rochdale extended their lead at the top of League Two to nine points as substitute Joe Thompson scored the only goal of the match at Shrewsbury.
Left-back Tom Kennedy hit the post and crossbar in a first-half during which Shrewsbury were totally outplayed.
But Thompson finally struck for the league leaders when he headed home with his first touch of the game.
And Shrewsbury's day got worse when defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was sent off for a foul on Chris Dagnall.
Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Simpson told BBC Radio Shropshire:
"Probably one of the toughest afternoons we've had. The last time we played at home we won 1-0 and I thought we deserved to win by more. This time it's fair to say Rochdale probably deserved to win by more than 1-0 too.
"We didn't do ourselves any favours playing as side as good as Rochdale and we got what we deserved.
"We weren't anyway near good enough to get a result. And Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was stupid and childish to get sent off. You wouldn't expect to set that on a parks pitch."
Rochdale boss Keith Hill told BBC Radio Manchester:
"I thought the performance was exceptional. From the first whistle we created opportunities, we had possession with penetration, and the gameplan worked against a very good Shrewsbury side.
"We had to have a defensive structure, but also bear in mind that we wanted to attack to try and win the game.
"Tom Kennedy is definitely the best left-back in our league. He should be playing at a lot higher standard and let's hope it's with Rochdale.
