A Ben Davies strike helped Notts County boss Steve Cotterill maintain his perfect start against Chesterfield.
Left-winger Davies capitalised on a wayward clearance against the run of play on 25 minutes and rocketed a shot past Tommy Lee from 20 yards.
County could have doubled their lead when Luke Rodgers' squirming effort was hacked off the line by Alan Goodall.
The Spireites came close but Simon Whaley missed a sitter and Kasper Schmeichel denied Wade Small.
Notts County manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I thought it was a full blooded derby. There wasn't an inch given by both teams and I thought both teams gave it a really good go.
"Give credit to Chesterfield, they've been on a great run, they've been the form team in the league and we've beaten them.
"Fantastic finish from Ben Davies, good enough to win any game. Ben's come into his own in the last two games, tonight he was magnificent."
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"I'm disappointed because we lost the game but not disappointed with the way we played. I thought we had a right go.
"But I'm disappointed with the result and the manner of the goal we've conceded, because it was down to sloppiness from us."
