Accrington defender Darren Kempson's injury-time own goal handed Torquay United their first win of 2010.
It ended a run of 11 games without a win, lifting the Gulls eight points clear of second-from-bottom Grimsby.
The hosts went ahead when Lee Mansell fired in after good work from Wayne Carlisle, but Stanley levelled after Michael Symes netted from six yards.
Carlisle hit the bar, but the Gulls won it when Kempson put through his own net under pressure from Ashley Barnes.
After twice equalising in the last five minutes to earn successive 1-1 draws from their two previous games, the Gulls' winner against Accrington came even later - in injury time.
Torquay United manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon: "We're all very relieved. We've been waiting quite a while for a win, but I thought we deserved that.
"We had several chances again and we need to be more ruthless in front of goal as a group.
"Football's not always that easy and you're not given anything, so you've got to fight and we've done that."
